Bringing your Dog to France

We are animal lovers and have 3 dogs and 2 cats at Le Moulin Verneau.  We are happy to accept dogs (maximum 2 per booking) after brief consultation about your dogs. (Breed, Spayed/Entire, House rules).

We have chosen to offer an Adult only environment as our dogs are not used to having small children around.  However, there are always occasions when rules can be broken.  If you are travelling with a dog and struggling to find dog friendly accomodation for your family please do get in touch. We will help if we can.

Step by Step Process

Bringing your dog from the UK to France.

A step by step guide travelling with your furry friend from the UK to France (and back).

·      Microchip - Ensure your dog is microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant chip. Update the address if you have moved house since it was implanted. Ensure your name is the registered owner.

·      Vaccinations- In addition to the usual annual vaccinations, your dog must be vaccinated against rabies. The vaccination must be done after the microchip. You are able to travel after 21 days have elapsed. The rabies vaccine is valid for 3 years.

·      Animal Health Certificate (AHC). Obtain an AHC within 10 days of your outward travel, this replaces the old pet passport. This can be obtained either from your own vet (approx. £200) or from a Vet who specialises in AHC provision and is usually located near your departure port, so you can collect the certificate just before you travel. (approx. £100).

We recommend using Easy Pet Travel www.animalhealthcertificates.com who are based in Ashford just 10 minutes from the Eurotunnel at Folkestone. £99.

·      Travel Arrangements - Choose a pet friendly route and transport; most ferry, train an airline services have specific pet policies. Personally, we recommend the Eurotunnel as you stay in your vehicle for the 35-minute crossing with your dog and it's the fastest means of crossing the channel. There are ferries which offer pet friendly cabins which are ideal for overnight crossings. Other ferries offer kennelling.

·      Pet Passport Control – At all ports there will be a designated system for having your pet checked ahead of travelling. The Eurotunnel has Pet Passport office which you visit to have your pet’s microchip checked and your AHC checked and approved for onward travel. You are only checked on your departure point not on arrival.

·      Plan your Journey - If you are staying at Le Moulin Verneau we can provide you with a route from your port and if possible give you some recommendations of good places to stop to give yourselves and your dog a comfort break.

·      Returning to the UK - Tapeworm treatment drugs must be administered by a Vet 24 to 120 hours before leaving France to re-enter the UK. (This is hour specific). If you are staying at Le Moulin Verneau an appointment can be made with our local vet within the 1-5 days ahead of your departure.

·      The AHC is valid for four months, if you are in France for longer it might be worth asking a French VET to provide you with a European pet passport.
